ABOUT

Cleo Yong works as a violinist, violist, musicologist, and teacher in Greater Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Outside of her music making, she enjoys hiking, photography, and reading.​


Cleo has performed in various orchestras and chamber ensembles. She has performed around North America in festivals such as the Festival Internacional de Música in Naolinco, Mexico, the PRISMA Music Festival based in Powell River, Canada, and Quartet Fest West in Victoria, Canada. She has also performed as an ensemble musician in various orchestras. From 2021-2022, Cleo collaborated with contemporary composers from Mexico and Spain to write and perform pieces for solo violin. These pieces form part of the disk titled 'Maja Bhuta' in the Proyecto Ars Nova.

She has been teaching musicians of all ages and abilities as a private teacher as well as in orchestral sectionals since 2015, using the Suzuki method and the Royal Conservatory of Music. â€‹

Cleo holds a Bachelor of Music degree with a minor in English Literature from the University of Victoria. She studied under the supervision of Sharon Stanis, Joanna Hood, and the Lafayette String Quartet.


Currently, Cleo is working towards completing her MA in Musicology at the University of Victoria. Her research interests include race and gender in music, exoticism in music, film music, opera and orchestral music, and early 20th century Mexican Classical music.
